Band reviews

  1. YulBrynner

Whilst Operator Please demonstrate their professionalism as young artists during their sound check, the boisterous lads of Yul Brynner kick back with a tinny; chucking balloons about backstage like cherryade filled youths at a pop and crisp night. Lead vocalist Marcus Horsley summarised his thoughts upon playing with the well recognised, Indie-pop Aussies through a brief yet direct statement. "I'm absolutely shitting myself"; I never would have guessed from his excitability, verging on attention deficit disorder, and his Cheshire cat grin from ear to ear. Taking to the stage as the first band of the MySpace Assembly gig, Marcus calls for his band mates to 'stop chatting up girls' and play some ******* music; reminding their awaiting audience as to why they coughed up the last of their dinner money to buy a ticket. After a short delay, the four other band members mooch onto the stage and introduce us to the old crowd pleaser; a sample of Dr Dre's 'The Next Episode'. Although the intro got a few heads bopping, the real shapes were thrown when the band dived in to their animated performance of 'Magnets'; a song with such exuberance and energy not too dissimilar to the likes of the Foals. By the time they reach 'I don't read newspapers (no news is good news)'; the kids at the front of the stage are passing a sweaty Marcus round like a hot potato. Despite the crowd demanding a rendition of Bloc Party's 'Banquet', it is fair to say that the lads impressed the room with their own tunes rather than their covers. The catchy riffs teamed aptly with the band's impulsive lead vocalist meant that there wasn't one body stood still. More to come from Yul Brynner is eagerly anticipated......
